Did You Lose Your Garage to Chaos? It's Time to Get Organized!

One of the things you loved about your home when you moved in was the large garage. You had grand ideas of the projects you would complete here. Perhaps you just want a place to tinker. However, it's now lost in a sea of boxes, tools, and general clutter. Is it so bad you walk to work, but just turn around and leave? It's time to get organized!

Boxes, Bags, and Beginnings

If your garage couldn't handle a Matchbox car, let alone a full size vehicle, then it's time to do something. The boxes of "stuff," the bags of "things," and the general clutter can all organize into some semblance of sanity. The first step is to choose a day to tackle this mammoth job when you won't be interrupted. You also should have a decent day of weather. Grab a cup of coffee and go open that garage door. Even it you think it's intimidating, you can have that entire area organized over the course of a day.

First, take everything out of the garage. That's right. Drag it all out. You'll probably have to dissuade the garage sale shoppers, but that's okay. You can't know what to keep and what to get rid of if you can't see it all. Start with the things you know must stay. Pull those off to one side - you'll deal with that later. Now it's time to start getting rid of the stuff you don't want. That's usually where people have the most difficulty. Think of it this way - how long has it been in your garage? One year? Three? If you haven't looked for, unpacked it, or if you didn't even know it was in there, maybe it's time to let it go.

Once you know what has to fit back into the garage, you're over halfway there! How much storage area do you have in your garage? If you don't have much, then you may need to purchase some shelving. Steel shelving is often best in a garage setting. It's strong, durable, and you normally don't have to worry about corrosion. If there is room for this organizational answer, then get it up on the walls.

The next part is to make sure those boxes are labeled correctly. Tape up the boxes with items that won't be used for awhile. This will limit the rest of the family from rooting through the boxes and upsetting the packing. If you have several tools, tool chests, or other types of mechanical necessities, then you need to have a storage solution for these as well. Tools are to large of an investment to simply leave lying around. Make sure each tool has it's place. Got kids that just won't leave your tools alone? Then it's time to get a locking tool chest!

Finally, get rid of the trash and unwanted items. Now maybe a time to have a garage sale! When you're done, you can give yourself a pat on the back. You've got your garage back and you can begin your next big project!
